6 Simple Ways to Control Anger

6 Simple Ways to Control Anger

While it is perfectly normal for humans to express anger, and even healthy to do so, it can also be a very destructive, dangerous emotion if one lets it get out of control. This can be true especially regarding one's health-and even possibly bring on a heart attack or a stroke. As blood pressure goes up due to uncontrolled anger, so does the pressure in your heart and brain-thereby leading to the stroke or possible heart attack.Let's look at six different ways to control your anger, and reduce your health risks at the same time.1.Laugh, smile, crack jokes.2.Communicate better (OK, this isn't always easy) 3.Environmental changes (not particularly hard) 4.Change your thinking 5.Find relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga 6.Search out ways to solve problems.Laughing, smilling, cracking jokes-obviously this involves finding and using a sense of humor. If you think you don't have one, you are wrong.Everyone does. You will just have to work on seeing the lighter side of life.Better communication is never easy.Learning to use the "I" statements-"I feel" instead of "you did" or "It's their fault" statements will make all the difference in the world. It may seem a little bit painful at first, but with practice, it will be easier, and all right.Actually stop and LISTEN to what the other person is saying to you first-in other words, learn to 'bite your tongue' and THINK about what you are going to say.Environmental changes are as simple as turning down the lights or even lighting some candles.Go for a walk, or go to the library.Sit and read a book, curled up under an afghan.Sit in front of the fire, just chilling out, or go on a trip to the beach or the mountains-or whatever it takes to change your environment. The change doesn't have to be drastic-but enough that you notice, and can actually relax.Changing your thinking is one of the most difficult things to do.Realize that staying calm and rational will beat being angry any day of the week. You will be more likely to win any argument in a rational, calm frame of mind than you will in an angry one. When one becomes angry, one also becomes very irrational, and unable to think clearly-so aim to stay calm.Yoga and meditation are two forms of relaxation that help almost anyone with calming themselves down. The reason behind this is because both of these practices involve slow breathing, which forces the practitioner to think about what they are doing. And, the practitioner must remind themselves to "relax" or "breathe deeply" in order to successfully do the poses that they are aiming for. Also learning to picture or place themselves in a particular place while practicing the yoga or going through the meditation is also very helpful for the practitioner.Challenging oneself to find different ways to solve problems other than simply becoming angry.Perhaps stepping back from a situation, taking a deep breath, and making an actual plan that can be followed instead of going off like a firecracker would be easier-and progress could be made in whatever you were trying to do.
