You hear it all of the time. "keep your glass half full" or "look on the bright side" but how do you make your thoughts? What does it mean to be a positive thinker? How does a positive thinker live and react? There are not any guidelines for positive thinking. There is no committee or panel that decides who is an optimist and who is a pessimist. It is all about your perception of why things happen and keeping your perspective. In life, you are exposed to two main feelings with everything you do, feelings of pain and feelings of pleasure.Your mindset is the judge, jury, and executioner when it comes to determining how much mental and emotional pain or pleasure you feel from an experience in your life.It is your reaction to the experience, not the experience itself that determines how deeply the situation will affect you mentally and emotionally. When a positive thinker comes across a negative experience in life, he is able to keep things in perspective and doesn't give much thought to the areas of the situation that cause pain.He focuses on what he can do to make the situation better and is rational when determining why it happened. If he finds himself responsible, he makes the appropriate changes to eliminate the pain; however, he will not put irrational blame on himself.Regardless of all of the details regarding the life experience, the positive thinker does not dwell on feelings of pain and focuses more on experiences that bring feelings of pleasure. He also focuses on things he has that others do not, rather than things he doesn't have that others do.When an experience in life causes feelings of pleasure, a positive thinker does not hesitate to give himself credit for the positive consequences. He expects good things to happen, but understands some things are out of his control. He does not believe as much in luck, but rather setting oneself up for success. The positive thinker also supports himself with others who are in the same mindset. He supports himself with others who share the same values and put him in positive situations. Here is an example of a life experience where being a positive thinker makes all of the difference.Life Experience #1.Debbie Downer lives in the city of Anytown and is a manager at ABC Insurance. She leaves work and it begins to rain.Debbie Downer pulls out her umbrella and begins her one mile walk back to her apartment. An abrupt gust of wind catches her umbrella and blows it completely out of her hand and over a building. She immediately becomes furious and says, "Why me? I have the worst luck in the world, stuff like this only happens to me" and continues her walk home soaking wet.Just steps before Debbie gets home, a truck drives by and splashes a puddle all over her.She curses at the driver and takes off her shoe and attempts to throw it at the truck. She misses the truck and her shoe goes down a sidewalk drain. With only one shoe, she walks up the stairs to her apartment complaining about how people in this town are idiots.Debbie had plans to go out to dinner, but she tells her friend she is having a bad day and cancels. At the end of the day, Debbie feels like this was the worst day ever and her walk home from work had a major impact on her.Life Experience #2.Positive Paula also lives in the city of Anytown and is also a manager at ABC Insurance. She leaves work and it begins to rain.Positive Paula pulls out her umbrella and begins her one mile walk back to her apartment. An abrupt gust of wind catches her umbrella and blows it completely out of her hand and over a building. She just smiles and says, "Oh well, it's only water" and continues her walk home soaking wet.Just steps before Paula gets home, a truck drives by and splashes a puddle all over her.She is a little surprised, but it doesn't really phase her because she is already soaked and knows she has dry clothes to change into when she gets home. She walks up the stairs to her apartment, gets changed, doesn't think much about it, and follows through with her plans to go out to dinner with her friend. At the end of the day, Paula feels like it was a pretty good day and her walk home from work had a minimal impact on her. What is the difference? Both Debbie and Paula experienced the same thing, but the overall results were completely different. The cause of the major disparity here is focus. What you choose to focus on plays a huge factor on how you interpret a life experience.Debbie Downer lost perspective and made the baseless claim that everything always goes wrong in her life and also tried to place blame on the people in her city for ruining her day.Debbie focused only on the negatives and that negativity tends to always possess her thoughts.Positive Paula, on the other hand, kept things in perspective by realizing a little rain won't really hurt anything. She also told herself she probably could have avoided getting splashed by the truck if she would have been a little farther away from the street while walking on the sidewalk. All of this little stuff doesn't matter much to Paula anyways because she is excited to spend some quality time with her friend at dinner.Paula is focused on the positives and negativity exits her mind very quickly.A negative mindset can turn a typical life experience into a miserable one, causing a downward spiral. On the contrary, improving how you feel about yourself and thinking positive will improve your quality of life. The first steps to adopting a positive mindset are focusing on what you can control and keeping perspective.By doing so, life will be more enjoyable and less stressful.Your mindset is what controls how you decode a situation.A depressed person and a happy person both have a heart and a brain. They both face challenges in life. They both experience anger, sadness, and joy. They both require oxygen to breathe. The sun comes still comes up every morning for both. The only difference is their mindset. The only person who can take action and change your feelings of misery is you.Circumstances in your life could most certainly be worse, so start enjoying life because you have a lot more control than you might have originally thought. You are probably already thinking of some areas in your life where if you adopted a positive mindset, you would be happier.Take action now!

Making Your Thoughts Positive
